AB O objectivo principal deste artigo é o de analisar as relações entre o poder episcopal e o Tribunal do Santo Ofício, durante o período de estabelecimento, organização e consolidação da Inquisição, ou seja, a época que decorre entre a criação definitiva desta, em 1536, e a promulgação do seu primeiro Regimento impresso, em 1613. A tese central que se procura sustentar é a de que as relações entre estes dois pólos de poder do campo religioso foram por norma de grande cordialidade, cooperação e até complementaridade, pese embora a afloração de algumas dissenções pontuais, fricções que foram um pouco mais vivas após o Concílio de Trento. Significa isto que o caso português, tal quanto os estudos disponíveis possibilitam vislumbrar, teria sido distinto da situação verificada nos territórios onde também actuaram Inquisições modernas, a saber Espanha e Itália.
AB The main objective of this article is to analyse the relationship between the episcopal power and the Holy Office, during the period of establishment, organization and consolidation of the Inquisition, from its definitive creation in 1536, to the proclamation of its first printed Regiment, in 1613. The central thesis which we are trying to sustain, is that the relationship between these two poles of power in the religious field were often of great cordiality, cooperation and even complementarity, although there were some disagreements and frictions, a bit vivid after the Trent Concile. This means that the portuguese case, as far as the available studies permit to uncover, would be distinct from the situation in other territories, as Spain and Italy, where the modern Inquisitions operated.
