The author calls on his fellow Americans to move beyond indifference and seek ways to make the American "Promiseland"—the land of unfulfilled promises—truly the Promised Land of opportunity where everyone can flourish. If we do not operate in this way, the very walls of fear and indifference that we construct and reinforce will entrap all of us in perpetual strife and conflict. The article devotes consideration to the author's pastoral work at "Bridging Austin" in Austin, Texas, where a reconciling community of friends builds bridges of love rather than walls of fear and indifference. Such work takes to heart and builds on Jesus as our peace, who tears down the wall of hostility between people groups, to make one new humanity. Only as we take to heart Jesus' vision and MLK's dream that reflects that vision can we make the "The American Dream" a joyful reality for everyone. | ||
