520 |a Ulrich of Rozmberk (1403-62), a leading Czech baron, was active in the pursuit of his country's welfare while sensitive to the happiness of his family and open about his own weaknesses. In the name of the common good he made peace with his Taborite neighbors while vigorously prosecuting those who threatened his power. Rozmberk believed that the marriages of his children were a means to extend the power and material base of his lineage. But when his daughter Perchta was miserable in her marriage, Ulrich responded and violated a cardinal male value by intervening in the domestic affairs of a fellow aristocrat in the interests of his daughter. Rozmberk's letters show not only his public and domestic roles, but also his masculine and feminine faces. Ulrich of Rozmberk played each role and showed each face frankly, deliberately, and without embarrassment.
