However, at the same time Knox was composing The First Blast, he was writing letters to female friends which are remarkably free of gendered rhetoric. Reading The First Blast in conjunction with these letters produces an odd sense of vertigo, yet what governs genre, rhetoric, and ideology in both The First Blast and the letters is Knox's conception of the authority of God's law as revealed in the Bible. This powerful verbal rubric divides idolatrous from godly while uniting both sexes in obedience to God and submission to his word.
