Although the narrative shows relatively little of the daily concerns of a mercantile life, its acute dangers are illustrated, primarily to teach the value of mutual aid and support within the network of business contacts. Marriage is a loving partnership in which wives' opinions are respected but not in conflict with those of right-minded husbands; wives play very little part in working life. The well-to-do middle-class household is depicted, most unusually for the literature of the period, as sufficient in itself as a goal for the aspirations of youth. | ||
