Taking as a point of departure the families of the lesser elite of Poppi, a town in northeast Tuscany, it illustrates their financial and career strategies and their role in the process of state consolidation. The transformation into a landed elite strengthened the economic and social position of the town's ruling families and led to their entrance into military careers. A career in the grand ducal militia gave provincial elites the opportunity for locally based upward mobility and for new positions of leadership within the community. It also conferred these lesser elites a new sense of nobility and helped create a new Tuscanwide social group tied together by a common identity. | ||
