Lemaire's text argues that throughout history schisms have been caused by popes and healed by councils; the Church has been damaged by the failure to hold councils, by avarice and ambition among the clergy, and by the imposition of compulsory clerical celibacy. This article examines how Lemaire manipulates his sources in order to give a historical account most damaging to the papacy and most flattering to kings of France and Holy Roman emperors. Not only are the moral shortcomings of popes attacked but also some of their disciplinary pronouncements and, by implication, their doctrinal ones. The text anticipates the coming Reformation less in its theological position than it its general tone of aggression towards the papacy.
