Summary: | Toward the end of his life, Gerardus Listrius, a Dutch evangelical humanist and follower of Erasmus, wrote his Epistola theologica against the Zwolle Black Friars. When placed within an appropriate biographical context, Listrius' Epistola turns out to be the expression of his shift from Erasmus to Luther. When presented within the wider context of Northern Humanism and the early Reformation in the Low Countries, Listrius' shift challenges the traditional and current view of this period which recognized as decisive only the influence of the young, broadly evangelical general-reform Luther. Besides Listrius, several other examples support the thesis that in the period 1520-30 a number of Dutch evangelical humanists were influenced also by Luther's views. |
