Breugel fused two traditioal popular genres, the fabled land of cockaigne and collections of illustrated proverbs, in order to set his interpretation of contemporary political events into a traditional, popular, humorous-satirical framework. The arcane details of the painting that Breugel finished during the end of the First Revolt illustrate proverbs that a Flemish audience could easily recognize and interpret. The Land of Cockaigne formed the link between sixteenth-century religious propagnda and the political satire of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, which developed into the modern political cartoon.
