However, Fernando de Valdes' role in the Comunero Revolt and the political thought and career of his son Juan illustrate the revolt's complexities and the continuity of a Spanish civic humanism. Father and son promoted what they believed to be the "common good" of the Kingdom by defending the interests of the urban gentry in Cuenca and Naples respectively.
