On stage and in the battle of books, it put the Reformation on an equal footing with, and turned the tables on Rome. At the same time, Melanchthon's humanism provided a key to Scripture, replacing the one in the hand of the pope. The rhetorical tradition united the Protestant poet, preacher and playwright in a cultural communication system without which the Reformation would have remained a cry in the wilderness. | ||
