This article analyzes the students how left their native city of Burgos to become fellows at the Spanish college between 1500 and 1560. Although they were few in number, information from Burgos yields an unusually definite impression of their social background. In general, they came from the lower level of the urban elite, as measured by the criteria of family membership on the city council, family membership in Burgos' "Confraternity of Caballeros," and the use of the titles "don" and "dona" by parents and relatives.
