Wotton must, however, be considered a supporting rather than a leading figure in the history of Reformation England, for he belonged to that group of Tudor civil servants who subscribed to a separation of public and private religious sentiment. The net result in his diplomatic and ecclesiastical career was the faithful execution of Tudor policy and the subsequent praise from most of his contemporaries for this steadfast executor. | ||
