Primarily remembered for his work in the latter category, his career had its foundation in the church, and it was in the ecclesiastical realm that royal favor was often communicated to this loyal Tudor servant. Wotton must, however, be considered a supporting rather than a leading figure in the history of Reformation England, for he belonged to that group of Tudor civil servants who subscribed to a separation of public and private religious sentiment. The net result in his diplomatic and ecclesiastical career was the faithful execution of Tudor policy and the subsequent praise from most of his contemporaries for this steadfast executor.
