Particular attention is paid to the tensions between prior expectations and sometimes harsh realities, as well as to the ways in which travel writers responded both explicitly and implictly to previous accounts of the places they were describing. Among the visitors treated are F. R. Chateaubriand, J. S. Buckingham, Judith Montefiore, Mark Twain, and Theodor Herzl.
