Seven Onomastic Problems in Josephus' "Bellum Judaicum"

The seven problems investigated here all involve onomastic confusions which, although apparently similar in nature, cannot all be explained in the same manner, if at all. The problems include some of quite long standing, such as the contradictory lists of delegates sent to Josephus ("BJ" 2...

520 |a The seven problems investigated here all involve onomastic confusions which, although apparently similar in nature, cannot all be explained in the same manner, if at all. The problems include some of quite long standing, such as the contradictory lists of delegates sent to Josephus ("BJ" 2.628 vs. "Vita" 197), and the fates of Joseph ben Gurion and Eleazar ben Ananias. Sometimes, the best explanation is a textual error; other instances of apparent contradiction may be resolved to yield new historical information. In some instances neither approach provides an adequate explanation, such as the sudden disappearance of Eleazar ben Ananias in "BJ." In such cases we must simply accept the existence of an important gap in our knowledge, caused by tendentiousness, carelessness, ignorance, or lack of interest on the part of Josephus.
