Description
Summary:The Chrestus event in Suetonius Claudius 25.4 has been dated to 41 CE on the basis of the view that it is the same occurrence as is referred to in Dio 60.6.6-7. The purpose of the present study is therefore twofold; first, to examine whether or not the happening described by Dio may in fact be dated to 41 and, second, to determine if it is legitimate to equate Suetonius and Dio so as to fix the expulsion of Roman Jews under Claudius to that emperor's initial year in power. The result of this analysis is that while the event in Dio should be ascribed to 41 the Chrestus associated explusion cannot be identified with or dated on the basis of it.
