La première réponse, pratique, vise à convaincre celles et ceux qui rejettent la conception politique jugée valide, ou alors à la contraindre, en mettant en œuvre d’éventuelles sanctions. C’est le modèle de Hobbes. La seconde réponse cherche à former, à travers les institutions, le sens de la justice parmi les citoyens, afin que ces derniers prennent la défense de ces institutions. Il s’agit dans ce cas d’une stabilité pour de bonnes raisons, selon Rawls, qui voit en Rousseau l’un des principaux partisans de ce modèle. Rawls a-t-il bien lu Rousseau ? Si Rousseau, à partir d’une tout autre vision de l’être humain que Hobbes, s’est effectivement mis en quête de moyens de stabiliser les institutions politiques républicaines, il n’est pas certain qu’il ait véritablement envisagé la possibilité de les stabiliser, ces institutions étant intrinsèquement fragiles à ses yeux. Il se peut que Rawls n’ait pas adéquatement réfléchi aux forces institutionnelles non-démocratiques que les institutions démocratiques génèrent elles-mêmes. | ||

First, there is the practical response, which seeks to convince those who reject what is viewed as a legitimate political conception, but also to coerce them, including through the use of sanctions. This was Hobbes’ model. The second response tries to give rise, through varying institutions, to a sense of justice among the citizens, so that they themselves will defend these institutions. This is institutional stability for the right kind of reasons, according to Rawls, and Rousseau in this regard. Did Rawls read Rousseau correctly? On the basis of a very different vision of human beings than Hobbes, Rousseau did indeed search for ways to render the republican political institutions stable, but it is not certain that he thought this would be possible, given his sense of the intrinsic frailty of these institutions. Rawls does not appear to have adequately pondered the non-democratic institutional forces which democratic institutions themselves generate. | ||
