520 |a Marking the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death, this study intends to reaffirm the Supreme Poet's theological character; to this end, the article will focus on the literary affinities between Dante and John, the author of the Book of Revelation, pointing out the substantial connection between theological narrative, biblical message, and the author's personal experience. Dante's target is to enrich his readers' lives by the means of his literary work, and in pursuing this task, he takes the challenge to rewrite the Scripture: in doing so, it is apparent that he thinks of himself as a prophet, a spokesperson for a divine message, «for the world's sake, which lives badly». In addition to the touchpoints between the Revelation and the Divina Commedia one can detect on a literary plane, John's apocalyptic thought affects both the poet-theologian's perspective on the world and the way in which he expresses it within the context of his Commedia. In particular, the last six cantos of the Purgatorio, which could be read as a poem within the poem, are to some degree unique: here, Dante draws up a genuine "apocalyptic drama", where the prophet - a man forced into exile, a man who in human terms has lost everything - adopts as his own Olivi's hopes in announcing that God's intervention - cryptic, yes, but also certain - will finally change the world, helping it out from the state of severe corruption it currently finds itself in.
