520 |a Over the last decades of the 20th century, and the first few years of the 21st, the conflict within the life of the Baptist church has often focused on control of Baptist-affiliated institutions of higher education. During this time, two such institutions in Georgia, Mercer University and Shorter College, were engaged in a struggle for power with the Georgia Baptist Convention, and often provided focal points for doctrinal disputes within the Baptist church as a whole. In this paper, the authors describe the development of the recent conflict between the Georgia Baptist Convention and the aforementioned institutions, provide historical background on intellectual life in the Baptist church generally, and provide a description of the legal issues that controlled the outcomes of the controversy concerning the two universities.
