520 |a English writer G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was an essayist, novelist, poet, and literary and social critic who was well known for his aphorisms, paradoxes, and Christian apologetics. Though his work was highly regarded in his lifetime, he went into a period of eclipse in the second half of the 20th century. Now he is being rediscovered by a new generation, but this resurgence of interest is largely outside of the academy. Most universities have not returned any Chesterton works to their curricula. This is partly understandable in that Chesterton was a consistent critic of most modern ideas regarding science, psychology, art, economics, philosophy, theology, and even higher education itself. However, Chesterton is valuable not only for the striking and far-reaching counter-arguments he offers to modern theories, but for the clarity and completeness of his thinking. This paper argues that a broad and deep reading of Chesterton is exactly what higher education needs, especially Christian higher education.
