The institute builds on an impressive tradition of scholarship and international experience in such disciplines as linguistics, cross-cultural understanding, biblical studies and exegesis. GIAL emphasizes both academic credibility and holistic preparation for cross-cultural service in its programs, and welcomes opportunities to cooperate with other institutions in these endeavors. Although it has points of similarity with seminaries, Christian colleges and secular institutions of higher education, the GIAL model is unique in its combination of origin, purpose, and profile. The institute faces some challenges as it seeks to relate both to the higher education community and the Christian service community-especially in the areas of demonstrating long-term financial stability, demonstrating a need for significant administrative infrastructure, celebrating relationships with other institutions and yet maintaining independence, and defending the need for institutional review and evaluation. Such disciplines are well understood within the educational community, but not so well developed within the Christian service community.
