His first short story, "The Death of the Old Man" (Mot hazaken, 1957), was written in a language that was labeled "Agnonian." Yehoshua eventually freed himself from Agnon's mesmerizing chains of influence, developing creative and increasingly sophisticated ways to refer to Agnon in his important novels., This article first demonstrates the way in which A. B. Yehoshua integrates Agnon's works in Mr. Mani (Mar Mani, 1990); I then apply a more in-depth analysis to The Liberated Bride (Hakala hameshahrereth, 2001). In Mr. Mani a specific allusion to one of Agnon's works serves to illustrate Yehoshua's ideological thrust and his sharp irony regarding the Diaspora Jew. In The Liberated Bride Yehoshua weaves a complex intertextual web incorporating several Agnon works, aiming to introduce a humorous and playful dimension to the novel. Not only does he locate much of the novel's central action adjacent to Agnon's house in Jerusalem, but Yehoshua also names one of the novel's main female characters after one of Agnon's best-known female characters. Thus, Yehoshua expressly directs his readers to search for the subtle connections between The Liberated Bride and both famous and lesser-known writings of the Nobel Prize winner, S. Y. Agnon.
