A pallid, cold lifelessness envelops his poem, which heavy with death proceeds through images of ‘the mountain of desolation,’ ‘winter sun,’ ‘snow hills’ and ‘dust in sunlight.’ Simeon looks wearily backward as he waits ‘for the wind that chills towards the dead land.’
