AB Until comparatively recently, inventories which confined themselves to a mere listing of titles of works, were the only source available to characterize library holdings. With the advance of scientific research, however, the need for detailed manuscript catalogues has become ever more widely recognized. A multitude of facts, such as date, provenance (if it is at all possible to establish it), copyist, possessors, and so forth, are required for each manuscript.
