At this point, scholarly judgment has settled on a number of positions which may be said to be canonized or have passed into an opinio communis of medievalists. This body of received data has been sifted most recently by Wolfgang Gericke, who, after judicious summary of the important preceeding literature, has invited us to consider a new thesis to explain the genesis and development of this most contentious document. |
