Grâce à l’élargissement du répertoire de textes et du cadre chronologique dans lequel les huguenots français ont construit les arguments politiques utilisés pendant les guerres de religion, une vision plus ample et nuancée de leur pensée politique a pu être dégagée. Désireux de contribuer à cette remise en question des clichés historiographiques autour du « républicanisme huguenot », nous nous arrêterons sur la conceptualisation de l’autorité royale dans les écrits publiés par le polémiste calviniste Innocent Gentillet après le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy (1574-1576). L’existence d’interventions comme celle de Gentillet, qui se montre plus proche de juristes proto-absolutistes tels que Chasseneuz, Bodin ou Pasquier sur plusieurs points, confirme que les théories du « triumvirat monarchomaque » (Hotman, Bèze, Duplessis-Mornay) ne furent pas systématiquement reçues par les nombreux polémistes huguenots actifs durant cette période. Seules des explications très nuancées peuvent rendre compte de la pensée politique diverse et complexe élaborée par les huguenots à cette époque. | ||
| 520 | |a In the best-known textbooks of political thought, scholars continue to diminish the contribution made by sixteenth-century French Reformers to the theory of resistance. However, an expanded repertoire of texts and a wider chronological net now make it possible to offer an account of the political arguments constructed by the Huguenots during the Wars of Religion that is at once more robust and more nuanced. In an attempt to contribute to the reassessment of historiographical clichés relating to Huguenot Republicanism, I will focus in this essay on the conceptualization of royal authority in the works of the Calvinist polemicist Innocent Gentillet following the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre (1574-76). The existence of works like that of Gentillet, which on many points is closer to such proto-Absolutist jurists as Chasseneuz, Bodin, and Pasquier, serves to confirm that the theories of the “Monarchomach triumvirate” (Hotman, Beza, Duplessis-Mornay) were not received in any systematic way by the numerous Huguenot polemicists active during this period. Only a highly nuanced account will be able to reflect the diversity and complexity of the political ideals elaborated and espoused by the Huguenots. | ||

Dank der Ausdehnung sowohl des Textrepertoires als auch des zeitlichen Rahmens, in dem die französischen Hugenotten die während der Religionskriege verwendeten politischen Argumente entwickelten, konnte eine breitere und differenziertere Sicht auf ihr politisches Denken erzielt werden. In der Absicht, einen Beitrag zur Infragestellung der historiographischen Klischees um den „hugenottischen Republikanismus“ zu geben, konzentrieren wir uns auf die Konzeptualisierung der königlichen Autorität in den Schriften des calvinistischen Polemikers Innocent Gentillet nach der Bartholomäusnacht (1574- 1576). Beiträge wie die von Gentillet, die in vielerlei Hinsicht den Werken proto-absolutistischer Juristen wie Chasseneuz, Bodin oder Pasquier näherstehen, bestätigen, dass die Theorien des „monarchomachischen Triumvirats“ (Hotman, Bèze, Duplessis-Mornay) nicht systematisch von den zahlreichen hugenottischen Polemikern angenommen wurden, die während dieser Zeit aktiv waren. Nur mit einer sehr differenzierten Auseinandersetzung kann das diverse und komplexe politische Denken durchdrungen werden, das damals von den Hugenotten erarbeitet wurde. | ||
