Summary: | The use of a linking element ‐n‐ between the verb stem of the imper‐ fective and an object pronoun suffix is a well‐known feature of Western Aramaic languages and dialects. This linking element is traditionally thought to be formally related to the so‐called energic suffixes in West Semitic, which in turn are assumed to be cognate with the ven‐ tive morpheme in Akkadian. It is argued that the formal identification of the energic with the ventive can explain the morphophonological distribution of the linking element ‐n‐ in Biblical Aramaic and that the functional identification of the energic with the ventive can explain the use of ‐n without an object pronoun suffix in the A$$hiqar proverbs as a reflexive‐benefactive marker.1 |
