520 |a The German-Lutheran theologian Edmund Schlink (1903-1984) was not only one of the most important Lutheran theologians of the twentieth century, but also one of the most important Christian theologians of the twentieth. This is a fitting epitaph for Schlink as his theology was relentlessly ecumenically focused, while still confessionally Lutheran. This article provides a summary of his career, including his regular interaction with the great German-Catholic theologians of the twentieth century and Karl Barth, as well as Christian theologians from other lands and traditions. This history illuminates Schlink's Ecumenical Dogmatics, the culmination of Schlink's five decades of scholarship. An English translation from the article's author is forthcoming from Vandenhoeck and Ruprecht, as part of the ongoing translation of Schlink's collected works (Edmund Schlink Works) edited by the author. An excerpt of this translation is available in this issue of Lutheran Quarterly.
