Description
Summary:In this article we seek to explore the nest of issues surrounding the anti-Judaism which is expressed by Melito of Sardis in his Peri Pascha. In the first part we review the literature to date. Here we find that a number of explanations have been proposed, none of which in themselves satisfactorily explain Melito's attitude. In the second part we suggest that Melito was himself Jewish by birth, and that this makes a contribution to his anti-Judaism. In the third part we examine Melito's own Christian tradition, and here identify the controlling factor in his attitude towards Judaism.
