Description
Summary:Early Prehistoric and Bronze Age archaeology on Cyprus is at a watershed. The goals and methodologies of new archaeology and post-processual archaeology are only now beginning to have an impact on how and why archaeological research is implemented on the island. At the 1992 annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research, in San Francisco, a consultation was held to begin to address some of the challenges presented by the arrival of the New Archaeology to Cypriot archaeology. The area chosen for scrutiny falls under the rubric of "social archaeology." E. J. Peltenburg (1993), S. O. Held (1993), S. W. Manning (1993), D. Frankel (1993) P. S. Keswani (1993) and A. B. Knapp (1993) were invited to assess our present state of knowledge of the level of social complexity on the island between the fourth and the second millennia cal B. C. E. as well as to suggest beneficial directions for future research, analysis and field work. A. Kingsnorth's contribution (1993) offers a critique of their efforts of synthesis and interpretation from an anthropological perspective.
