RT Article T1 The Island of Iotabê in the Byzantine Sources: A Reprise JF Bulletin of ASOR VO 287 SP 1 OP 4 A1 Mayerson, Philip LA English PB The University of Chicago Press YR 1992 UL https://ixtheo.de/Record/1789833701 AB The recorded history of the island of Iotabê in the Red Sea spans a brief 60 years, during which time it changed hands at least four times. The island served, not to control shipping, but to tax merchandise coming from the region(s) known at that time as India, and then to transship it to Roman ports. Iotabê has persistently been identified with the island of Tiran even though archaeological investigation has ruled out that possibility. Identification of Iotabê with any island, ancient or modern, remains in doubt. DO 10.2307/1357135
