Executed in various materials (basalt, pottery, and on a wall painting), animals and containers alike are closely connected with the two main branches of the contemporary economy, namely, sheep/goat rearing and agriculture. The figures are essentially cultic in character, implying a use in rites to promote increase and prosperity, probably in an everyday domestic context. While most of the figures discussed have long been known, this is the first time that they have been considered as a group: all are seen to have been fashioned to the same end: the guarantee of basic subsistence needs essential to man's existence.
