Two Aramaic Contracts without Dates: New Collations (C 11, 49)

Forty-five Aramaic contracts or fragments from 5th-century B. C. Egypt testify to the presence of a date at the beginning of that century. 520 |a Forty-five Aramaic contracts or fragments from 5th-century B. C. Egypt testify to the presence of a date at the beginning of that century. Two of the contracts lack dates and endorsements (Cowley 11 and 49). Repeated examination of C 11 (Bodleian Library) has resulted in the relocation of ten fragments. Textually, this yields the name of the debtor ([Gema]rish ]b. A]ḥio; reduces the amount of the loan (3½ shekels) and interest (7 ḥallurs per month); and raises the date within the document (December 23, 487-January 21, 486 B. C.). Papyrologically, it demonstrates that the document lacked initial date and endorsement. R. Degen joined P. Berlin 23104 to C 49 to yield a 23-cm-wide text. However, the folding pattern requires a 29-cm width and demonstrates that the text lacked date and endorsement. Although the expression ytly ʿlyk remains difficult, the text was probably a receipt (nbz) or a cancellation of debt.
