Summary: | This article examines the contribution of Stephen Cardinal Kim to building civil society in the context of democracy in South Korea. The current scholarship on the Church and Korean democracy focuses on the resisting aspect of the Church vis-à-vis dictatorship. This article, however, emphasizes civility, that is, the moral dimension of civil society, as significant in an emergent pluralistic society after democratization. Cardinal Kim contributed to strengthening civil society in Korea by confrontation with the authoritarian regime, advocacy for the marginalized, and leadership style. |
