520 |a In the first half of the twentieth century Alois Dempf developed a Christian reflection on person and society that was a transcendental philosophy and a cultural sociology. Thomas Aquinas assisted him in pondering the dynamics of knowing, while German philosophers from Friedrich Schelling to Max Weber influenced his theology and ethics. He presented the formats of cultural periods from Byzantine theocracy to Prussian monarchy as a service to the philosophy of religion. Opposing Nazism through his writings, he sought after 1945 reconciliation between France and Germany and prepared for the emergence of Christian democratic parties. His thinking illustrates the variety and strength of Catholic intellectual life during the emergence of movements and theologians leading to Vatican II.
