While Bellarmine reminds us that the obscurity of scripture is due in part to numerous textual difficulties, whether linguistic, logical, or literary, he also points to a deeper difficulty. The scriptures have as their principal author an infinite God who spoke to finite men; therefore, any merely human or academic interpretation of the scriptures is incapable of preserving God's saving truth. Bellarmine teaches that God gave the scriptures to the Church and not to the individual believer; He also gave to the Church a teaching office as the means for preserving scripture's meaning. Lastly, the scriptures alone are insufficient to communicate God's saving truth; therefore Apostolic Tradition, as part of the Word of God, helps to serve the meaning of the written word of God. Il trattato più completo sui principi dell'interpretazione biblica di Bellarmino è nel suo Disputationes de controversiis Christianae fidei adversus huius temporis haereticos. Mentre Bellarmino ci ricorda che l'oscurità della Scrittura a è dovuta in parte a numerose difficoltà testuali, sia linguistiche, sia logiche o letterarie, egli evidenzia anche una difficoltà più profonda.
