Il leur fallait pour cela, retrouver le lien intime de la théologie et de la spiritualité, recentrant la raison et la vie sur le Christ, vérité ultime de l'homme. Maréchal et surtout le philosophe Blondel avaient frayé la voie de ce renouveau. Aux questions d'actualité auxquelles ils s'attelèrent: l'engagement politique du catholique, l'athéisme anti-chrétien ou la prédestination, ces hommes, si différents l'un de l'autre, tâchèrent de donner des réponses puisées aux sources de la Tradition bimillénaire de l'Église. C'est leur vie même qu'ils mirent dans leurs paroles - au risque de la perdre, comme ce fut le cas du P. de Montcheuil. The generation of de Lubac, Fessard, Daniélou, and other French Jesuits, with whom Balthasar associated - improperly called the 'school of Fourvière' - was united by a common desire to get out of the impasse in which a Suarez-inspired neo-scholastic apologetic had shut up Catholic thought and to reopen a dialogue with the world by taking on its problems from within. To that end, it was necessary for them to rediscover the intimate bond between theology and spirituality, again centring reason and life upon Christ, man's ultimate truth. Maréchal and above all the philosopher Blondel had already paved the way for this renewal. For the questions of the day with which they were engaged - such as the political involvement of Catholics, anti-Christian atheism, or predestination - these men, quite different from one another, strove to give responses drawn from the bi-millennial Tradition of the Church. It is their very lives that they put into what they wrote, even unto the risk of losing them, as was indeed the case of Fr. de Montcheuil. | ||
