We may not speak of two conflicting souls in Orientalium Ecclesiarum, but of two perspectives, a Catholic Eastern and an ecumenical. Together they spell out what is at stake in Eastern ecumenism; separated they distort the identity of Catholic Eastern Churches. Offering the hitherto most specific image of the East in a conciliar document, Orientalium Ecclesiarum treats some Vatican II themes better than other documents. The overriding issue is how to keep both identity and communion; for Orientalium Ecclesiarum, it can only mean identity through communion. Orientalium Ecclesiarum provocò reazioni diverse, così da suggerire che la chiave di lettura potrebbe trovarsi in queste dispute. Si tratta di letture che partono dalle prospettive cattolica e ecumenica. Se le prospettive vengono separate drasticamente, il significato di Orientalium Ecclesiarum ne sarà distorto. In realtà Orientalium Ecclesiarum offre un'immagine della varietà orientale, inquadrando alcuni temi conciliari meglio che altrove. La questione basilare sta nell'evitare la separazione fra identità e comunione. Secondo Orientalium Ecclesiarum l'identità si realizza attraverso la comunione, salva però la pluralità delle Chiese orientali.
