The article wishes to contribute to the clarification of the conditions of this necessity: a) by considering the evolution of the communitarian absolution outside the danger of death; b) by explaining the theological conditions required for the valid application of this form of absolution; c) by illustrating the obligations binding the penitent after the absolution; d) by commenting on the other pastoral norms that are brought to it. We have treated each of these points in turn: a) the progressive interventions of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Congregations for Bishops and for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the Code of Canon Law; b) a description of «grave necessity» and the three simultaneous circumstances which constitute it, especially the significance of the adverb "diu" (for a long time); c) the dispositions required of the penitent by divine and ecclesiastical law for receiving general or communitarian absolution and satisfying the remaining obligations; d) the pastoral norms for protecting the correct application of general or communitarian absolution. | ||
