520 |a There has developed in recent times a better knowledge and a deeper awareness of the common dignity of all the members of the People of God as well as of the responsibility which all have in the Church with regard to her life and the fulfilment of her mission. To stimulate and enable Christians to contribute to the life and mission of the Church, the Holy Spirit confers graces to them through the sacraments and the hierarchical ministry; but besides these he also generously distributes other graces, commonly called charisms which, however, are described in clearly different ways. All must, of course, listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit with full and concordant docility without allowing personal considerations and individualistic attitudes to empoverish the quality of their obedience to his promptings. The article intends to contribute to the realisation of such docility. To this end it first recalls how the word of God and in its wake the Church of Vatican II conceive and present the charisms; it goes on to stress that the various charisms need to be exercised in authentic and sincere communion with the other members of the People of God.
