Firstly they treat briefly the controversy proper to the Churches of the Reformation and indicate that in the Catholic Church the problem is prior to the publication of the new ritual of the baptism of infants. Nevertheless it subsequently deals in particular with the problem in Cathholic circles in the years following 1969, i. e. the publication of the new ritual. The study, divided into three sections, first collects the principal themes which nourish the controversy: difficulties inherent to the case of infants, new testament and patristic problems, those involved in the general theology of the sacraments and in ecclesiology and pastoral theology. Then it gathers together the positive considerations which, recalled naturally in the course of the debate, manifest the doctrinal legitimacy, the pastoral opportuneness of the traditional usage: from the point of view of the New Testament and of anthropology, in accord with the sentiment of the faithful, with Christian doctrine and with the recent teaching of Vatican II. A last part exposes and criticizes some of the experiments proposed or practised here or there: "baptism by stages", a non-sacramental rite celebrated at the birth of the infant.
