Summary:This article examines the development of the axiom Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus with a view towards drawing certain lessons for doctrinal development theory. The article traces the axiom's development and points to some of the reasons behind it. It then draws on some key passages of John Henry Newman to explain what has been happening during this process of development. Following thereupon, it finally offers some constructive principles for applying development theory today.
