En effet, c'est sous son impulsion que fut repris, en 1881 et 1882, le débat cardinalice sur la participation des catholiques italiens au vote politique, en rapport avec la détérioration de la situation du Saint-Siège et avec l'élargissement du suffrage électoral. En 1882, à la demande du Pape, vingt-deux prélats italiens, pour la plupart favorables au dépassement du non expedit, furent appelés à se prononcer sur la question. La résolution finale constitua un compromis entre diverses exigences sur lequel influa la préparation électorale destinée à consacrer le succès du «transformisme» de Depretis. L'étude fait ainsi ressortir certaines orientations du pontificat de Léon XIII qui conduisent à reconsidérer certains lieux communs concernant le catholicisme politique en Italie à la fin du XIXe siècle. A rich unpublished documentation allows us to recover various scenarios of the debate that took place under the pontificate of Leo XIII about Catholic participating in political life. In fact, the Pope himself was responsible for the debate being taken up again by the cardinals in 1881 and 1882 on the participation of Catholics in political voting. In 1882, at the request of the Pope, 22 Italian prelates were asked to express their opinion; the majority of them was favorable to going beyond the non expedit. Forming a compromise between different demands, the final outcome was influenced by the electoral preparation destined to ratify the success of Depretis' «transformismo». The present study thus brings out some orientations of the pontificate of Leo XIII, which lead one to reconsider certain commonplaces about political Catholicism in Italy at the end of the nineteenth century. | ||
