Les Canadiens français étaient blessés par le comportement de leur coreligionaires irlandais, qui prenaient le parti de la majorité protestante anglophone dans leur prétention à entraver l'enseignement du français. Cette sérieuse fêlure à l'intérieur de l'Église canadienne poussa le Pape Benoît XV à intervenir pour essayer de rétablir la paix entre Catholiques. Le présent article montre les efforts du nonce apostolique, Mgr Pellegrino Francesco Stagni, pour contenir et résoudre la crise. Si, au début, le Saint Siège sembla suivre une politique défavorable à la cause des Canadiens français, plus tard, avec sa lettre apostolique Litteris Apostolicis, le Pape soutint publiquement le droit des Canadiens français à une éducation en français dans les écoles publiques de l'Ontario. During 1910s, the existence of Bilingual Schools in Ontario, which were frequented mostly by the children of the French-speeking Catholic minority of that province, became the centre of criticism and polemical debate in Canada. The French Canadians were offended by their Irish correligionists, because they sided with Protestant anglophone majority in their quest to restraint the teaching of the French language. This serious rift within the Canadian Church moved Pope Benedict XV to intervene in an attempt to restore peace amongst Catholics. This article presents the attempts of the apostolic delegate in Canada, Msgr. Pellegrino Francesco Stagni, to contain and resolve the crisis. If, initially, the Holy See seemed to follow a policy which was not favourable to the French Canadian cause, later the Pope, with his apostolic letter Litteris Apostolicis, publicly supported the right of French Canadians to be educated in French within the Ontario public school system. | ||
