Muzi, découragé, prit la décision problématique de rentrer en Italie. La pastorale publié à son arrivée à Santiago et la Carta Apologética divulgée à Montevideo (dont la traduction et la diffusion en Italie étaient prohibées par le Saint-Siège) révèlent assez son caractère. La relation des deux envoyés montre leur opposition à l'indépendance de l'Amérique latine et souligne les problèmes pastoraux du Continent. Based mostly upon published sources, the following study presents briefly the political and religious situation of Latin America in the beginning of the 19th century, the years of the Muzi-Mastai mission in Chile. It focuses on the difficulties caused by the internal disaccord of different mission-members, giving special attention to the instructions of the Holy See addressed to mission-leader Msgr. Muzzi and to the obstacles created by the strong attitude of the governments of Argentina and Chile. After a few months, discouraged Msgr. Muzzi made the questionable decision to return to his native country, Italy. One gains insight into the real character of Msgr. Muzzi by reading the pastoral letter published upon his arrival in Santiago and the Carta Apologética, first published in Montevideo, whose translation and diffusion in Italy were prohibited by the Holy See. The correspondance of Muzi and Mastai demonstrate a decisive opposition towards any kind of independence in Latin America and lays stress upon the pastoral problems of the continent. | ||
