L’Aquinate utilizza l’argomento agostiniano, secondo il quale Dio permette il male perché è tanto potente da convertirlo in un bene maggiore, per dimostrare la non contraddittorietà tra la bontà divina e l’esistenza del male. Secondo noi, però, questo argomento non è valido in riferimento alle malattie mentali che impediscono l’uso della ragione. Nel sistema tomista, ogni malattia, con l’aiuto della ragione, è un aiuto verso la beatitudine eterna. Non è così per il disabile mentale che viene santificato nonostante il suo handicap. Why does God allow people to be born with disabilities? The present paper looks for an answer to this question, taking as a starting point the Thomistic theory of evil and reviewing both the references to disabling illnesses in St. Thomas’s work and the secondary literature relevant to this topic. By using the Augustinian argument that God allows evil because He is so powerful to turn it into a greater good, Aquinas shows that the goodness of God is not in contradiction with the existence of evil. Nevertheless, I will argue that this argument does not hold for the mental disabilities impairing the use of reason. Within Thomas’s framework, any kind of illness, through the use of reason, becomes a help towards the heavenly beatitude. This is not the case of the mentally impaired is sanctified, her handicap notwithstanding. | ||
