Sulla base di un’analisi molto dettagliata della lettera, si sostiene che Fredegiso vi difende l”esistenza’ del N con argomenti insieme logico-semantici ed esegetici, e questo metodo combinato di ermeneutica e analisi del linguaggio gli permette di concludere in modo originale e unico sull’argomento. Egli infatti afferma che N è un concetto irriducibile, innegabile: non si può affermare che non esista; però riconosce anche che non possiamo pensarlo: esso è dunque un esistente impensabile. L’articolo si conclude illustrando l’affinità delle tesi di Fredegiso con alcune posizioni contemporanee circa la natura del nulla e il riferimento dei termini non denotanti. The article develops a new interpretation of Fredegisus of Tours’ letter De nihilo et tenebris, which is one of the most well-known texts about the nature of ‘nothing’ (N) as metaphysical given as well as concept. On the basis of a detailed analysis of the letter, it is stressed that Fredegisus defends the ‘existence’ of N with semantic as well as exhegetic arguments, and this combined method allows him to conclude in an original and brilliant way. He claims first that N is somehow an irreducible, undeniable concept: we cannot affirm it does not exist; and second, that, despite irreducible and ontologically necessary, N is unthinkable: we must admit that it exists, but we cannot say what is it like. N is hence an existent-unthinkable thing. The article concludes by indicating the interesting connection of Fredegisus’ theses with contemporary debates about N and the reference of negative terms, and suggesting that the existence of N is to be intended as similar to the existence of mathematical and fictional objects, but with some subtile and interesting differences. | ||
