| Riepilogo: | This paper focuses on Aquinas’s semantics of terms and propositions, and concentrates on his Commentary on De interpretatione 1, the general Prologue to the work, and De interpretatione 4, the chapter devoted to the significant speech. The paper shows that Aquinas borrows many doctrines from Boethius and Ammonius, even though he occasionally departs from their interpretations. In his Commentary, Aquinas seems not to be concerned with logical questions; his goal is rather to expound closely on Aristotle’s text. Moreover, the paper shows that Aquinas attributes great importance to conceptual mediation in explaining signification. Understanding is what allows the imposition of nouns to signify and also what is signified by them. Questo articolo si concentra sulla semantica dei termini e delle proposizioni in Tommaso d’Aquino e si focalizza in particolare sul Commento di Tommaso a De interpretatione 1, considerato il Prologo generale all’opera, e a De interpretatione 4, il capitolo dedicato al linguaggio significativo. Nell’articolo viene mostrato che Tommaso adotta molte tesi di Boezio e di Ammonio, anche se talvolta si distacca dalle loro intepretazioni. Tommaso non sembra molto interessato a questioni logiche; il suo obiettivo sembra essere piuttosto quello di spiegare in dettaglio il testo di Aristotele. L’articolo mostra inoltre che Tommaso ha attribuito grande importanza alla mediazione concettuale nella spiegazione del processo di significazione dei termini e delle proposizioni. La nostra comprensione di una cosa è sia ciò che consente di imporre un nome a significare, sia ciò che i nomi ultimamente significano. |
