And if – according to the common viewpoint throughout the Middle Ages – He has created only one world, could He still create another one? And also – on closer looks into the infinite good nature God is credited with by Christianism – is the only one world He is supposed to have created the best one He could have created? These were among the questions which confronted the mediaeval theologians of scholasticism, with special attention to the eleventh-century cosmological dispute between Abelard and Lombard and the very fundamental stance of Thomas Aquinas. This paper aims at showing the origin of this debate in the rich legacy constituted by the ancient Greek literature, with closer attention, as an example of the investigation into God’s almightiness that Christian theologians ran throughout the Middle Ages, to the problem of God’s envy (invidia Dei), first discussed by Plato in his Timaeus. Actually, this latter was the only one writing by Plato known for almost all the Middle Ages, available in an incomplete Latin translation provided by Calcidius. Nella teologia della Scolastica, la questione della potentia Dei si pone inizialmente come un problema cosmologico, in particolare sulla possibilità che Dio potesse (o possa) dare origine a più mondi, e se l’unico che – secondo l’opinione dominante nel Medioevo – Egli ha effettivamente creato sia o no il migliore possibile. Eppure proprio un tale dibattito, che possiamo ritenere in certo senso riassunto dalla posizione espressa da Tommaso d’Aquino a chiusura della polemica dottrinaria tra Abelardo e Pietro Lombardo, mostra di dipendere da una ben più risalente letteratura in lingua greco-antica. Scopo del presente saggio è pertanto ripercorrere le origini del dibattito teologico medievale attraverso un’analisi in particolare del tema dell’invidia Dei a partire dal Timeo platonico nella versione latina di Calcidio: destinato a rimanere per lunghi secoli l’unica opera conosciuta e studiata di Platone, il Timeo sarà tra le fonti privilegiate dell’indagine cosmologica e teologica sull’onnipotenza divina nel corso del Medioevo. | ||
