This opinion stems from the fact that Lee was a lapsed Presbyterian and a scientific socialist who frequently denounced Christian individuals and institutions in his fiction. In this article, I argue that Lee was actually a secular Puritan who regarded the Gospel message as compatible with radical socialism. Consequently, he tended to criticize Christian individuals and institutions only when he felt that they had departed from the teachings of Jesus Christ.
